Understanding Girls Basketball Programs

AAU • Club/Travel • Feeder — what is the difference, and which path may be the best fit for your daughter?

Why This Gets Confusing Fast

Parents hear a lot of terms in girls basketball outside of school ball — AAU, Club, Travel, and Feeder — and many of them sound similar. Some programs even overlap, which makes it even harder to know what each one actually means.

This guide gives you a simple, clear breakdown so you can better understand the purpose of each type of program and what it may offer your daughter.

Quick Take

AAU = Exposure + Competition
Club/Travel = Development + Games
Feeder = Pipeline to High School
Program Type 01

Girls AAU Basketball

AAU is the most well-known high-exposure form of competitive youth basketball. It stands for Amateur Athletic Union, a national organization dedicated to amateur sports and athletic development.

Best Known For
  • Playing in larger tournaments, often with multiple games in one weekend
  • Strong competition and travel
  • Exposure opportunities, especially during the middle school to high school years
Typical Season: Spring/Summer most commonly, with some Fall/Winter options.
Main Goal: Compete, develop, and gain exposure/opportunities.
Good Fit If: Your daughter wants higher-level competition and wants to be seen more often.
Program Type 02

Girls Club / Travel Basketball

This is the most common pathway for many players and families. A club or travel team competes outside of school ball and typically travels to play tournaments or league games.

Best Known For
  • More development and more games than the school season alone
  • Structured practices and coaching
  • Competitive schedules ranging from local to regional play
Typical Season: Year-round options in Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer.
Main Goal: Training, competition, and player growth.
Important Note: Many travel teams also play AAU tournaments, which is why the terms often overlap.
Good Fit If: Your daughter wants steady development and competition without the most intense national schedule.
Program Type 03

Girls Feeder Programs

A feeder program is designed to prepare athletes for a specific high school basketball team. It is often more connected to the local school community than AAU or broad travel programs.

Best Known For
  • Building fundamentals early
  • Teaching the same concepts and systems used in the high school program
  • Creating continuity from youth levels into high school
Typical Season: Winter or school-year aligned, depending on the area.
Main Goal: Program development and preparation for high school basketball.
Good Fit If: Your daughter plays in her community or school area and wants to grow within that pipeline.

Which Path Is Best for Your Daughter?

There is no one “best” path. The right fit depends on your daughter’s goals, your family’s schedule, and the kind of environment that helps her grow.

Things to Consider
  • Her goals: fun, development, higher competition, or exposure
  • Family schedule, travel availability, and total cost
  • Coaching quality and true player development focus
  • The environment and how it affects her confidence

The Best Program Is the One That…

  • Develops her skills
  • Builds her confidence
  • Keeps her love for the game alive
  • Creates a positive, healthy culture
  • Gives her space to grow and be herself
